San Francisco Mayor Homeless Response Plan for the Next Year

By Gabby McIntyre

Mayor Daniel Lurie of San Francisco announced the city’s new plan to combat the homeless crisis in the area. After announcing the plan to build 1,500 shelter beds within the first 6 months of Lurie’s mayorship, the city official helped pass a law to hire the unhoused quicker and fight bureaucracy. With his primary campaign trail topic being the reduction of homelessness in the San Francisco area, Lurie has vowed to make a change for the estimated more than 8,000 unhoused individuals in the city of San Francisco.

Following two public places known for drug use being raided by law enforcement, Lurie stated, “We must strengthen and expand our behavioral health and homeless systems.” when addressing plans for street conditions. With this in mind, a new plan named “Breaking the Cycle” was created. The proposed plan within the next 100 days, will unify San Francisco’s 10 outreach teams that provide overdose emergency response and aid with going into a shelter. The plan will refurbish the current neighborhood-based system to connect people with resources. San Francisco plans to use state and federal funding to increase shelters and other homeless services. How the city controls harm reduction is also in the review in the next year to take more preventative measures with the handling of distributing clean supplies. Though controversial, public health officials support the aiding of drug users to prevent overdoses and infection.

Despite stunted results due to an inability to provide long-term shelter and treatment, a walk-in triage to connect people with government programs and a police command station, after the passage of a Fentanyl State of Emergency Ordinance. By providing safe alternatives for people on the street, the city hopes to improve the situation of homelessness.
