San Francisco Mayor Gives Updates on Homeless and Economic Progress

By Gabby McIntyre

On Thursday, April 17th, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie made a public appearance to discuss the city’s recent progress on homelessness and public safety. With his 100th day in office near, Lurie acknowledged the city’s struggle to rebound after the pandemic closed offices, creating economic problems for the area. With a recent rise in local businesses deciding to stay in the downtown area and people reserving the convention center, the mayor believes the city is progressing toward economic stability. Lurie stated that he believes the downtown area must be considered safe to attract visitors and boost revenue. He also promised to continue to commit to the goal of creating more shelter beds for the unhoused and developing housing in the city. “We are trending in the right direction: Street encampments are dropping and violent crime is down 15%,” Mayor Daniel Lurie said.

According to Lurie, the city will soon open a 24/hour drop-off center at the end of the month and will reach its goal of 1,500 new shelter and treatment beds by the summer. At the new drop-off center, individuals experiencing substance use and mental health-related crises can receive aid from street outreach teams, law enforcement, and paramedics. The Mayor expressed support for a zoning change in westside neighborhoods that would allow for more homes to be built in the area. This comes after pressure to meet his state-mandated plan to create 82,000 new housing units by the year 2031.

“What I’ve learned in these first 100 days is you can’t solve what you can’t see. And I’m going to keep walking and talking to people each and every day, until public safety and public faith have been restored,” Mayor Lurie said.
