Zac Clark and The HomeMore Project with the Solar Powered Makeshift Traveler backpack for the Homeless

New Makeshift Traveler 5.0 Arrives in Hayward, California!

We are excited to announce that the newest version of The HomeMore Project’s solar-powered backpack, the Makeshift Traveler 5.0, has officially arrived at our storage facility in Hayward, California! This milestone represents another step forward in our ongoing effort to improve the Makeshift Traveler based on years of direct feedback from individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness. Since launching the program, we have continued to refine the backpack with a focus on durability, comfort, safety, connectivity, and the realities of living outdoors. Version 5.0 builds upon those lessons with improvements designed to make the pack an even more effective resource for the people we serve.

From Hayward, these new Makeshift Travelers will be assembled with essential supplies and distributed through our growing network of nonprofit, healthcare, government, and community partners throughout California. Each pack represents more than a backpack; it provides secure storage, essential supplies, and solar-powered phone charging that can help someone remain connected to family, healthcare providers, case managers, employment opportunities, and housing resources. The arrival of Makeshift Traveler 5.0 marks an exciting new chapter as we continue expanding the program and working toward a future where every person experiencing unsheltered homelessness has access to practical, dignified tools that support their journey toward stability.
