The Makeshift Traveler backpack has never been a static product. From the beginning, it’s been shaped by movement, by miles walked, nights slept outside, changing weather, changing needs. Every version of the pack reflects what we learn from the people who carry it every day.
This newest iteration is no different.
One of the clearest pieces of feedback we heard was about visibility. In some situations, standing out isn’t helpful and can even feel unsafe. In response, we’re testing an all-black colorway, designed for a more subtle, low-profile presence when desired. This change doesn’t alter what the pack represents, but it gives the traveler more control over how visible they want to be in different environments.
Rest is essential, and for many Makeshift Travelers, the backpack doubles as a sleep system. Based on that reality, we’ve upgraded the pack with a larger pillow, offering better head and neck support during rest.
It’s a small change of one that acknowledges how often the pack becomes part of someone’s sleep, not just their storage.
We also took a close look at how the pack feels during long days of walking and carrying. The result is a slimmer outer shell, making the backpack easier to manage in crowded spaces, public transit, or when navigating daily routines. The goal wasn’t to remove function, but to refine it, so the pack moves more naturally with the person carrying it.
While we reduced visibility where appropriate, we also wanted to increase safety when it matters most. The new model includes added reflectors to support nighttime visibility, especially near roadways or in low-light conditions. It’s about balance: giving travelers the option to stay subtle while still being seen when safety depends on it.
Connectivity can be critical: for communication, navigation, access to resources, or simply staying charged through a long day. One of the most significant upgrades in this iteration is the battery increase from 4,000 mAh to 10,000 mAh. That added capacity means more consistent access to power and fewer moments of being cut off when it matters most.
As we continue testing and learning, we’ll keep refining what the Makeshift Traveler can be: not just a backpack, but a reliable companion built for daily life on the journey.
