Housing plays a major role in all aspects of the world. The state of Oregon has been facing a Supreme Court ruling to implement those who are unhoused as well as camping bans, specifically within the guidelines and regulations. Claire Rush, Associated Press says. “Last June’s Supreme Court ruling made the southern Oregon mountain town of 40,000 the unlikely face of the nation’s homelessness crisis. It ushered in a new era of homeless policy by allowing cities across the U.S. to ban sleeping outside and fine people for doing so, even when there aren’t enough shelter beds.” (West Coast stations and Q.E.D.)
Meaning, that those without a home have had this issue of not having a place to reside here in the south of Oregon. Rush also writes. “The high court decision overturned a ruling from a California-based appeals court that found camping bans when shelter space is lacking amounted to cruel and unusual punishment under the U.S. Constitution’s Eighth Amendment. It enabled Grants Pass to enforce local ordinances barring camping on city property such as parks and sidewalks.” Grants Pass has worked to develop a shelter for adults known as “the Gospel Rescue Mission.” There are rules individuals would be required to follow if they choose to stay. For instance, participating in religious services while not allowing any use of substances or pets is strictly prohibited.
In addition, this has been quite controversial. “It wants to make being homeless in Grants Pass so unpleasant that people go elsewhere,” Disability Rights Oregon mentions of the city. “Despite the presence of numerous elderly, ill, and disabled people on site, the city increased its draconian restrictions in the dead of winter leaving hundreds of people with no legal option for their continued survival.”
