Today we feature Garrett, who is from San Francisco. Garrett reached out to us on our website after a few of his good friends received one of our Makeshift Travelers.
Garrett and I discussed the challenges of being unhoused as the temperatures are beginning to drop below 30. After asking him how he keeps warm, he educated me and showed me this small portable stove that can be used to cook while camping. It was minimal, fit in the palm of your hand, and supposedly would last between two and three hours after providing it with fuel. This brought to my attention the tradeoffs of being in a shelter vs. outside alone. These types of heaters, stoves, and lighters are not allowed in shelters and safe sleeping sites due to the potential fire conflict.
We are still in contact with Garrett, and if you would like to make a donation, please click the button below and write a comment, “Garrett.” We look forward to staying in touch with him and tracking his progress!
