This morning I met Gary, who is a former United States Officer in the Navy. Gary has been living in San Francisco and experiencing homelessness for nearly two decades. Before experiencing homelessness, Gary shared his experience of spending eight years in prison for a series of crimes. Despite this, Gary repeatedly reiterated how prison helped him recognize the importance of ‘always doing the right thing.’
For the past three years, Gary has been taking courses on computer programming along with free Google courses at a center off of Vanness Street. He mentioned how much he loves technology; he has a cell phone and tablet and hopes to get a new laptop. Gary also shared that his father, who passed away a few years ago, left some of his assets for Gary, but he is still unable to access them.
Gary and I chatted for about 45 minutes, learning about his story and discussing a passion for sneakers. Above all else, Gary had such a charismatic and enjoyable personality. I look forward to seeing him around with his Makeshift Traveler.
We recorded Gary’s contact information and are still in close contact with him. If you want to donate to Gary, please click the button below and write a comment, “Gary.”
