This morning I met Allen off of Vanness Street. Allen shared that before the pandemic, he worked many years as an App Developer for a large company in San Francisco. He mentioned as the company was acquired and then acquired again while coinciding with the Covid-19 pandemic, it put him out of work and inevitably homeless. Allen has bounced in and out of shelters for the past few years but has been in the same shelter for a year. He shared, “there are many nights where I choose to sleep outside the shelter because I don’t want to be in there, but it is nice to receive showers and belongings. When winter and the colder nights arrive, I will be in there every night”.
Aside from his previous work as a developer, Allen now aims to be involved as a social worker. He mentioned that he has applied for many roles for nonprofits within the unhoused community. In addition to his desire to be a social worker, Allen is also an outstanding artist. During many days, he leaves the shelter to create art in spots like this.
Allen’s contact information was obtained, and we are still in contact with him.
